Doylestown, Pa. (Nov. 20, 2012) - Alvernia University (1-0) set a new record for free throw attempts in a game with 51 making 35 in an 85-80 win over Delaware Valley (1-2) Tuesday evening in non-conference men's basketball action at Del Val.
The refs whistled 64 total fouls between the two teams. DVC lost four players to disqualification to two for the Crusaders.
The Aggies cut a 10-point deficit down to two points in the last minute and had a look at a 3 with a chance to tie the game, but it caromed off and the Crusaders sealed the win with two final free throws.
Alvernia built a 9-point lead late in the first half after back-to-back 3s from junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), who led the way with 20 for the Crusaders. Delaware Valley got the final bucket of the half, a jumper from Jeremy Beckett, who totaled a game-high 29, and Alverina led 38-31 at the break.
Alvernia scored the first 10 points of the second half to push the lead to 17 points, and held it above 10 until a late run by Del Val cut the gap all the way down to four points, 74-70 with four minutes to play.
The Crusaders scored six points over the next minute, all on free throws to build the lead back to 10, but the Aggies answered with a 10-2 run with Beckett scoring six of the 10--all with four fouls--to cut the gap to just two with 38 seconds to play.
Alvernia sophomore Steve Schneider (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) hit 1-of-2 free throws for a 3-point lead before the final miss from the Aggies then Schneider hit the final two to push the Crusaders past their previous best for free throw attempts in a game (50 vs Cabrini, Jan 14, 2008).
Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) scored 18 points for the Crusaders, Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, andTerrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scored 10 points. Bridgers and starting point guard Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) both fouled out for the Crusaders. Alvernia, which enters the season with a more guard-oriented lineup and concerned about rebounding margin won the battle of the boards, 45-32.
The Crusaders get right into the conference schedule with a trip to Lycoming next Wednesday.
