Reading, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2013) - Junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) nailed a huge 3-point basket with under a minute to play and Alvernia University (11-3, 6-2) defeated conference rival Arcadia University (10-6, 5-4) by a score of 72-65 in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Physical Education Center.

In the closing seconds of the game, with his team clinging to a 2-point lead, Bennett hit a fade-away 3-point shot as time expired on the 35-second shot clock.  The incredible shot set off the home crowd and gave the Crusaders a 5-point advantage with just 25 seconds remaining.  Arcadia came up empty on its next possession and the Crusaders hit four free throws to seal the win.

Alvernia took a lead just two minutes into the game and never looked back. Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) turned in an impressive first half scoring 13 points and hauling in eight rebounds. He finished with 15 points and nine boards.

Coming out of the intermission with a 7-point advantage, 36-29, the Crusaders shot 44 percent from the floor in the second period. After scoring eight straight points, the Knights to cut the deficit to just two points with 14 minutes remaining.

Bennett scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and played tight defense.  Arcadia trailed 62-52 with 5:30 to play, but scored 11 of the next 14 points to cut the gap to just two before Bennett's closing 3.

Alvernia head coach Mike Miller said, "Our team defense won, that's why were in first place right now. They (Arcadia) were averaging 76 points coming in and we held them to 65 so that was the difference."

Point guards Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) and Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area)  played the full 40 minutes. Clark finished with 10 points, four assists, and two steals.  Davis had nine points and seven boards.  Arcadia put a pair of players in double figures led by Joseph Brown who totaled 17.

With the victory, Alvernia passes Lycoming College for first place in the Commonwealth.  The Warriors lost at Albright and will visit Alvernia next Wednesday.  Before hosting Lycoming the Crusaders travel to Lebanon Valley on Saturday and to new conference member Hood College on Monday.
