Reading, Pa. (Feb. 4, 2013) – Alvernia University (17-4) put five players in double-figures and held an opponent under 60 points for the ninth time this season Monday evening in a 66-55, non-conference win over York College (7-15) at the Physical Education Center.

"Defense, defense, defense," said Alvernia head coach Mike Miller.  "I wasn't too happy with our intensity.  I'm just hoping it was because it was a non-league game, but to hold them to 55 points is still below their average."

Alvernia improved to 8-1 when it holds its opponent below 60.  The only blemish is a 57-54 defeat to crosstown rival Albright where intensity was certainly high for the full 40 minutes.

The Alvernia defense held York to 35 percent from the floor for the game.  The Spartans missed all five shots from the 3-point arc in the first half while the Crusaders hit 5-of-13 including four as they closed the half on a 14-2 run taking a 32-22 lead into the locker room.

Junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and sophomore Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) hit two 3s apiece during the run.

Alvernia opened the second half with a 10-2 run capped by another 3 from Bennett for a 42-24 lead and never looked back.  The Crusaders pushed the lead to as many as 22 points with 7:45 left again on a 3 from Bennett.

Bennett hit 5-of-11 3s on the night and led the way with 19 points.  Bridgers finished with 12 points, Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara) scored 11 points--all in the second half--and Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester) and Josh Vargas (Allentown, Pa./Christian Friends Academy) had 10 apiece.

"It's good," said Miller of his team's balanced scoring.  "We needed that.  We needed some scoring off the bench too and we got that from Josh."

Vargas reached double figures for the fourth time this season and the first time since scoring 11 points in a win at Elizabethtown back on January 12.

Junior point guard Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) was the only starter not to reach double figures in scoring, but he did match his career-high with 10 assists.

The Crusaders return to the conference schedule on Wednesday with a trip to Arcadia.  The Knights are in a 3-way tie for third place with Messiah and Albright.  All three are three games behind Alvernia and Albright who are tied at the top at 11-3 with four games to go.

"They're big," said Coach Miller of the final four games.  "They're all big and Arcadia's real big on the road.  They're fighting for a playoff spot.  Right now it's our most important game."
