New York, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2013) - Alvernia University (7-3) scored the final seven points of the game and nearly erased a 9-point deficit with two minutes to play in a 62-60 loss to New York University (9-1) Wednesday afternoon in non-conference men's basketball action at the Coles Sports Center.
The Violets missed four free throws, a layup, and a 3-pointer in their final four possesssions while the Crusaders got a 3-point play from sophomore Lamont Clark (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara), two free throws from Terrance Bridgers (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby), and a layup from Brian Parker (Chichester, Pa./Chichester), but came up just one shot short.
After Bridgers' free throws cut the gap to four points, junior Kahlil Bennett (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) had a look at two 3s that would have cut the gap to one with a minute to play.
The last two free throw misses for the Violets came with 5.7 seconds left in a 2-point game. Alvernia rebounded the second miss and pushed the ball across midcourt before taking a timeout with 2.2 to go to set up its final play. Chris Davis (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) was looking for Bennett in the corner, but NYU's Ryan Tana knocked the pass out of play and the horn sounded.
NYU opened up a 24-14 lead with seven minutes still to play in the first half, but saw the Crusaders score nine straight capped by four from Parker. The Crusaders took a 28-26 lead on a layup from Charles Cooper (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara), but NYU nailed a 3 on the final possession of the half for a 29-28 lead at the break.
The Crusaders put together an 8-0 run capped by back-to-back 3s from Bennett to take a 38-33 lead early in the second half. Bennett finished with 14 points going 4-of-10 from the arc.
The Violets answered with a 10-0 run as the Crusaders went 0-for-5 from the floor over the next four minutes. Bridgers ended the drought for the Crusaders with his only 3 of the night. Alvernia went 6-for-20 from the arc. Cooper hit the team's only other 3 late in the first half. It's the fifth game this season in which the Crusaders have hoisted 20 or more 3-point attempts.
NYU scored on a free throw to push its lead back to three points then the teams got hot over the next seven minutes going 10 combined possessions without coming up empty. The streak ended with an offensive foul on Parker that was compounded by a technical on the Crusaders' bench. NYU hit four straight free throws then turned a steal into a 3 and had an 8-point lead, 59-51 with 2:49 to play.
After a Clark layup, Parker committed a foul and a technical and the Violets hit 3-of-4 free throws to set the 9-point lead with just over two minutes to play.
Bridgers finished with a game-high 17 points. Parker had 13 points and 15 rebounds. The Violets had a pair of players reach double figures.
Alvernia returns home to get back to the Commonwealth schedule hosting preseason favorite Messiah College on Saturday.
