Ortega's Career Night Not Enough as Macabees Down Beavers

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Winter storm Nemo did not slow down Jordan Ortega's torrid place as the sophomore forward finished with a career-high 25 points on 12-of-20 shooting but the bench of Yeshiva University (9-13) outscored the City College of New York's (10-14) second unit, 23-2, to down the Beavers, 71-59, on Saturday evening at the Max Stern Athletic Center.

Ortega posted his first 20-point game of his career and reached double figures for the sixth consecutive game and added nine rebounds – six coming on the offensive glass – while Terence Johnston and Zachary Heiss finished with 17 points and 11 points, respectively. Thirteen of Ortega's 25 points came in the second half while Johnston and Heiss added 11 second half points. Paul Dail dished out nine assists and picked up two steals in the nonconference contest.

The first half was a defensive standstill and CCNY entered the half down four, 26-22. The Beavers trailed by as much as 11 with over 14 minutes left in the second half. The Beavers then scored seven unanswered points and cut their deficit to one before trading baskets with the Maccabees.

The Maccabees went 79 percent from the charity stripe and hit and 48 percent from the field. Yeshiva played unselfish ball all evening, dishing out 22 assists on 26 made field goals. Three Maccabee players reached double figures, led by Benjy Ritholtz finished with 20 points and Sholmo Weissberg added 16 points and eight rebounds off of the bench.

The Beavers return to Nat Holman Gymnasium for their regular season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and three seniors – Dail, Johnston and Israel Vickers – will be honored with a pregame ceremony.
