Coming off a tough loss to UW-River Falls on Wednesday night, the UW-Superior men's basketball team hoped to rebound with a big win against UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon.
The Warhawks had other plans however. And UW-Whitewater proved more than ready for the Yellowjackets, connecting on 55.2 percent of their shots while also forcing 20 turnovers in an 84-53 win at Kachel Gymnasium.
UW-Whitewater came right back, scoring the next six points for an 11-5 lead after a layup by Reggie Hearn with 13:29 left in the first half.
Consecutive scores from Aaron Corry (Lake Nebagamon, Wis./Northwestern) and Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) brought UW-Superior to within 11-9 at the 11:14 mark of the opening stanza.
The Warhawks again responded, scoring the next eight points for a 19-9 bulge after a jumper by K.J. Evans.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Cahill kept the Yellowjackets close at 24-20 with 4:56 showing on the clock.
UW-Whitewater went to score 17 of the next 24 points before halftime however, getting a pair of layups from Evans in the final 1:35 to take a 41-27 lead into the intermission.
From there, the Yellowjackets got no closer than 14 points as UW-Whitewater connected on 56 percent (14-of-25) from the field to pull away.
Offensively, UW-Superior was paced by Cahill with 17 points while Corry pitched in with nine points.
UW-Whitewater was led by Quardell Young with 17 points. Evans finished with 14 points while Merg had 13 and Darnell Harris 12 for the Warhawks.
The Yellowjackets close out the regular season on Saturday when they head to UW-LaCrosse. Opening tipoff from Mitchell Hall is scheduled for 3 p.m. The game can be heard on tape delay on 91.3 FM KUWS at a time yet to be determined. Matt Johnson will have the call.
