COLLEGEVILLE, PA – Host Ursinus beat Johns Hopkins 58-50 on Saturday afternoon, handing the Blue Jays their first loss since January 16 – a streak of six straight wins. The Blue Jays fall to 15-8 overall and 11-5 in the Centennial Conference, while remaining in third place in the conference standings. The Bears improve to 9-14 and 7-9 in the conference to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Jesse Krasna and Kevin Janowski hit back-to-back threes to stake Ursinus to a six-point lead with 3:49 to play as the Bears lead 52-46. Hopkins cut the deficit back to two with an old-fashioned three-point play by sophomore George Bugrainovic and a free throw from junior Connor McIntyre. But the Bears would close the game out with six unanswered points.
Hopkins led for most of the first half, leading by as much as eight points with 7:04 to play. Ursinus rallied with a 13-3 run to take a 26-24 lead on a pair of free throws from Ryan Adams. Jon Ward, Trevor Norton and Adams combined to score all 13 Bear points during the run. The teams traded buckets before Bugarinovic and hit a jumper and sophomore Luke Chambers converted a pair of free throws with one second remaining to give the Blue Jays a 30-28 lead a the half.
Sophomore Jimmy Hammer gave Hopkins a 36-32 lead with a jumper at 16:12. But six unanswered points from Ursinus swung the lead back to the Bears' favor and Ursinus led 39-36 with 12:39 to play. The lead seesawed up and down over the next two minutes and freshman Matt Chiusano gave the Blue Jays the lead at 42-41 but it was short-lived as an Adams three-pointer with 10:33 to go put the Bears ahead. Ursinus would not trail again as Hopkins would tie it up just once more, at the 5:30 mark on a Chiusano layup.
Bugarinovic led all scorers with 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to post his fifth double-double of the season. Senior Adam Spengler also finished in double figures with 10 points. Ward paced the Bears with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Adams added 13 points as well. Hopkins, the top three-point shooting team in the conference, was held to just 1-of-18 from three-point range, while Hammer had his streak of 10 straight games with at least one made three-pointer snapped. The Blue Jays' six-game win streak was their longest since the 2007-08 season.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, February 13 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. Game time from the Mayser Center is set for 8:00 pm.
