Macalester played a strong second half Saturday afternoon at the Leonard Center on Senior Day and the home-finale, but could not overcome a big halftime deficit as Carleton gained an 84-71 MIAC victory to hold on to fourth place in the standings.
Sam Marshall (Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) registered his third double-double of the campaign, scoring 22 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. He was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw stripe. Dylan Kilgour (Fy., La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley)netted 18 of his 20 points in the second half, going 4-for-6 from downtown in the period. Kilgour, the MIAC's top-scoring frosh, distributed four assists. Bert Yaffe (So., Bethesda, Md. / Walter Johnson) had 10 points and three assists.
The Scots out-scored the Knights 21-13 in points off turnovers and 15-11 in second chance points. Mac went 14-for-15 from the charity stripe. Carleton, however, shot 58% for the game, including 8-for-19 on three-pointers.
Scott Theisen posted his second triple-double in two weeks, contributing 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Carleton (14-9 / 11-7 MIAC). Tom Sawatzke paced the Knights with 26 points and Shane McSparron scored 22. Carleton led 45-27 at halftime and had 26 assists on the day.
Macalester has two games remaining on the season, Wednesday (Feb. 13) at Augsburg and Saturday (Feb. 16) at Bethel.
