Defense the difference in Transy win over Mt. St. Joseph

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Transylvania held Mt. St. Joseph to 16 points and 27 percent shooting in the second half Wednesday and posted a 65-39 win in men's Heartland Conference basketball action.
 
Transy is 17-5, 12-3 in the HCAC, while the Lions are 7-15, 6-9 HCAC.
 
Transy shot 50 percent overall from the field and outscored Mt. St. Joseph 21-12 from three-point range. The Pioneers stretched their lead to as many as 26 points midway through the second half.
 
Barrett Meyer had 21 points to key the Transy attack and Brandon Rash added 11 points and nine rebounds. Seven different Pioneers dented the scoring column.  Parker StansberryEthan Spurlin, and Tate Cox each scored seven points. Stansberry added seven rebounds and Spurlin had five boards. Taylor Botkin led in assists with four.
 
David Mann had 17 points and was the only Lion in double figures. Mt. St. Joseph was four of 18 from behind the arc and finished the game shooting just 31.4 percent.
 
Transy got off to a fast start, expanding a 12-8 lead to 26-8 with a 14-0 run. That would be the biggest lead of the game to that point as the Lions battled back with a 16-6 spurt of their own, setting the score at the break at 32-23.
 
Meyer had 16 points in the period, hitting six of seven shots, including four of five from long range. But no other Pioneer had more points than Cox, who had five.
 
Transy shot 54 percent from the field in the half, compared to 36 percent for the home team – a total that included a two for 10 effort from behind the arc. The Lions were paced by Mann's 13 points.
 
Transy returns to action on Saturday with a road matchup with Manchester at 3 p.m. The Pioneers complete regular season play next week with home games against Hanover and Bluffton.
