Jesse Winter Becomes Cortland's Career Scoring Leader in 84-56 Win vs. Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored 13 points and became the career scoring leader in Cortland men's basketball history as the Red Dragons defeated Oneonta, 84-56.

Cortland, ranked 24th nationally by D3hoops.com, won its 10th straight game to improve to 18-3 overall and 12-2 in the SUNYAC, two games ahead of second-place Geneseo. The victory is the 300th at Cortland for 18th-year head coach Tom Spanbauer, who is 300-191 on the Red Dragon bench and 312-204 overall in 19 seasons that include one year at Alfred University.

Winter currently has 1,421 points, eclipsing the previous school record of 1,419 set by Jason Thomas from 1992-95. Winter tied the record on a three-pointer with 10:59 left in the first half and broke the mark with his final points of the night on a driving layup with 17:41 remaining in the game.

Six Cortland players scored in double figures, led by senior Harrison Hefele's (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) 16 points. Hefele also totaled five assists and four steals. Junior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Winter led the team with seven assists in addition to his 13 points.

Senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy), sophomore Lamard Herron (Westbury) and senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) scored 10 points each. Cortland shot 55 percent from the field and 52 percent (12-of-23) from three-point range. Winter made 3-of-5 treys while Herron, Manning, Hefele and Smith nailed two three-pointers apiece.

Oneonta (2-19, 1-13 SUNYAC) was led by Zach Mager's 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Frankie Kelly added 11 points and five assists, Dan Lee scored nine points and Jack Dignan dished out five assists.

Oneonta led 21-20 on a Lee three-pointer with 11:16 left in the first half and trailed by only three at 30-27 after a Mager trey with 5:47 left. Cortland, however, finished the half on a 17-4 run, with Hefele scoring seven, and led 47-31 at halftime. Cortland pushed the lead to 25 less than five minutes into the second half and led by at least 17 the rest of the game.

Cortland will host Oswego on Friday, Feb. 8, at 8 p.m. Although not Cortland's final regular-season home game, the Red Dragons will celebrate Senior Night at the contest to recognize the team's five seniors – Winter, Smith, Manning, Hefele and Dan Sternkopf (Washingtonville).
