Men's Hoops Streaks Past Mount Saint Mary To Win Eighth Straight

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team scored six of the final 10 points of the game to hold on for a 66-62 Skyline Conference victory over the visiting Mount Saint Mary Knights on Thursday evening from the Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury (18-3) wins for the eighth straight game, improving to 13-0 in conference action while sending Mount Saint Mary (13-7) to 10-4.

Old Westbury grabbed control from the opening tip with a 16-6 run 7:33 into the game.  Joe Henain scored six of Mount Saint Mary's next 11 points in an 11-2 spurt to pull within one point (18-17) with 7:31 remaining in the half.  Tyrik Tucker sank a pair of free-throws and connected on a three-pointer as part of a 10-4 Old Westbury scoring edge to close out the final 5:13, holding a 28-21 lead at the half.

Old Westbury went up by double-digits on six different occasions in the second half, taking their largest lead of 12 with 9:05 left (50-38), 6:01 remaining (52-40) and 5:17 showing on the clock (58-46).  Mount Saint Mary's used a 16-6 run in which Donte Howell scored nine of the 16 points to make it a 64-62 game with 15 seconds left.  Rashawn McCarthy drained a pair of clutch free-throws with 12 seconds remaining to ice the game, giving Old Westbury a four point lead.  Mount Saint Mary would miss a pair of three-pointers and a jumper in the final six seconds to close out the game.

Tyrik Tucker posted his sixth double-double of the season, tallying game highs of 22 points (8-17 FG, 4-5 3FG), 12 rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes of action.  Rashawn McCarthy followed with 16 points, eight rebounds and a game-high six assists.  Omari Trebuse added 10 points, Ty Moore had eight rebounds and Darnell Chavis chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks off the bench. 

Joe Stabbach scored his 1,000th career point for Mount Saint Mary and finishing with 14 to pace the Knights.  Donte Howell shot 6-of-9 from the floor and finished with 13 points while Joe Henain contributed eight points and 12 rebounds.  Ryan Straub added a game-high three blocks.

Old Westbury shot 37.5 percent from the field (24-64), 37.5 percent from three-point territory (12-32) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (6-9).  Old Westbury's 12 three-pointers marked the sixth time this season the team connected on 10 or more triples.  Mount Saint Mary hit 41 percent from the floor (25-61), 29.3 percent from long distance (7-24) and 62.5 percent from the free-throw line (5-8).  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 42-31, and held a 12-4 edge off the offensive glass.  Old Westbury scored 13 points off 14 Mount Saint Mary turnovers.  

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood on Saturday (February 2) in a Skyline Conference showdown against the visiting Yeshiva Maccabees.  Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.  At 6 p.m., Old Westbury will be hosting the annual men's basketball alumni game.
