The Carthage College men's basketball team (10-10, 5-4 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) saw its four-game CCIW- winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, Jan. 30 with a 60-52 loss to No. 7 North Central College (17-3, 6-3 CCIW) at Gregory Arena at Merner Fieldhouse in Naperville, Ill. The Red Men defeated the then-No. 1 Cardinals, 64-53, on Jan. 9 at Tarble Arena in Kenosha, Wis.
In Wednesday's game, Carthage took a 13-12 lead at 12:03 first half and opened up a 10-point margin, 32-22, with 49 seconds to play. The Red Men led by eight points at the break, 32-24. North Central opened the second period with a 12-4 run to tied the contest, 36-36, at 13:57. The Cardinals took a 39-36 lead at 11:39 on a three-pointer by Derek Raridon. The game was tied at 47-47 with 5:25 remaining before North Central took the lead,, 49-47, on a layup by Landon Gamble at 5:07. The Red Men tied the game one more time, 52-52, at 2:36 on a free throw by Tyler Pierce. The Cardinals went up, to stay, 54-52, at 2:21 on a pair of free throws by Gamble. North Central scored the final six points of the game from the free-throw line to claim an eight-point decision, 60-52.
The Cardinals shot 36 percent (15-42), including just two-of-12 from three-point range, while the Red Men shot 32 percent (15-47), including six-of-26 three-pointers. North Central got to the free-line a whopping 38 times and made 28, while Carthage connected on 16-of-24. The Cardinals had a 39-31 rebounding advantage.
Landon Gamble scored a game-high 21 points for North Central on six-of-11 field goals, along with nine-of-10 free throws and six rebounds. Derek Raridon added 15 points on four-of-nine shooting and six-of-seven free throws. Reese Herth (So., Morton Grove, Ill./Skokie-Niles West) was the lone Carthage player in double figures with 12 points on four-of-nine field goals.
Carthage travels to Rock Island, Ill., on Saturday, Jan. 30 to play conference-opponent and No. 26 Augustana College (Ill., 15-5, 5-4 CCIW) in a 7 p.m. game at the Roy J. Carver Center.
