Kornbaum hits 10-of-10 from field in Augsburg victory

MINNEAPOLIS -- Dan Kornbaum (JR, Little Falls, Minn.) finished a perfect 10-for-10 from the field to lead the Augsburg College men's basketball team to a hard-fought 69-65 victory over Bethel University in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Monday night at Si Melby Hall.

Kornbaum finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, marking his seventh 20-plus-point scoring performance of the season and his fourth double-double to lead Augsburg (14-3 overall, 9-3 MIAC). According to the MIAC recordbooks, the highest single-game field-goal percentage was set by Kipp Christianson of St. John's (against Macalester) in 1997, when he finished a perfect 11-of-11.

Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies were Tyler Schmidt (SR, Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) and Brett Rasmussen (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS). Schmidt finished with 12 points and three boards, while Rassmussen posted 11 points and a career-high four steals. Parker Hines (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Minnehaha Academy HS) led Augsburg with six assists, nine points and seven rebounds.

Bethel (10-7 overall, 6-6 MIAC) was led by MIAC scoring leader Taylor Hall, who tied Kornbaum's 27-point game-high, while adding nine rebounds and a blocked shot.

The Auggies and Royals battled from start to finish. The game saw 18 lead changes and seven ties, with neither team ever leading by more than 10 points. After Augsburg led 30-27 at the intermission, both teams traded baskets for the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The Royals put toghter a quick 6-0 run to take a 56-51 lead, Bethel's largest advantage of the evening, with 6:47 to play.

Kornbaum answered with five consecutive points to tie the score at 56-56. Hines connected on a big three-pointer with 2:50 to play to give the Auggies a 61-58 advantage and the momentum. In the final minute, Augsburg was able to hit 8-of-10 from the free-throw line and pull down two huge offensive boards to seal the victory.

For the game, Augsburg shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the floor, while Bethel connected on 43.5 percent (27-of-62) of its shots. The Royals claimed a narrow 35-33 advantage on the boards but the Auggies were able to get to the free throw line 25 times, connecting on 17, while Bethel was only able to hit 5-of-6.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday (1/23) at 7:30 p.m., with Augsburg traveling to St. Paul to take on the Hamline University Pipers, while Bethel hosts Gustavus Adolphus College.
