Brooklyn Downs CCNY, 80-69; Snaps Four-Game Losing Streak

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team picked up a key City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) match up on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Center, as the Bulldogs defeated the Beavers of The City College of New York (CCNY), 80-69.

With the win, BC improves to 4-10 overall on the season and more importantly, 3-5 in the CUNYAC, as Brooklyn looks to continue to climb up the conference standings. The victory also snaps the Bulldogs' four-game losing streak. CCNY falls to 5-11 overall on the year and 1-7 in conference play with the loss.

Brooklyn was once again led by senior Kavon Baker, who dropped a team-high 24 points, to go along with seven assists, six steals and five rebounds to fill up the stat sheet. Freshman Egzon Gjonbalaj continued his stellar play notching a new career-high with 18 points, while adding five rebounds and five steals. Gjonbalaj has now scored in double figures in four straight games. Senior Jeffrey Noel chipped in with 14 points coming off the bench, while classmate Steven Grant finished the day with 12 points.

CCNY was paced by Anthony Lewis' game-high 25 points, to go with a game-best 12 rebounds for the double-double. Jordan Ortega and Zachary Heiss each added nine points, while Anthony Stephens and Guilherme Brodt each finished wit eight points. Paul Dail dished out game-high 14 assists.

The first four minutes of the game featured a tight affair, with two lead changes and two ties. After a jumper from Lewis gave the Beavers their first lead of the game, 13-12, at the 16:32 mark of the first half; the Bulldogs answered with a bucket from Gjonbalaj to regain their advantage, 14-13 (15:59).

BC would never trail again, as the Bulldogs would eventually build a double-digit lead. Brooklyn led by as many as 14, 40-26, with just 57 seconds left before the break, following a three-pointer from Baker. BC would eventually head into the locker room with a 40-28 halftime lead. Points off of turnover were a key to the Bulldogs building their first half advantage, as Brooklyn netted 19 points off of turnovers in the period.

The Beavers would be unable to recover from their first half deficit, as both teams played a tight second half, which saw CCNY outscore Brooklyn 41-40 in the final period. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 16 on a few occasions, as BC would go on to take the 80-69 victory.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 50.8% (30-59) from the field, including going 33.3% (4-12) from beyond the arc. Free throws would be crucial for the Bulldogs as well, as BC converted 66.7% (16-24) from the line, including taking advantage of two CCNY technical fouls.

The Beavers shot 47.7% (31-65) from the field, but struggled from three, converting just 16.7% (3-18) from downtown. CCNY also shot just 44.4% (4-9) from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn is back in action this Saturday, January 21st, as the Bulldogs will travel down to Pomona, NJ to take on the Ospreys of Richard Stockton College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
