PASADENA, CA – A strong low post presence helped Puget Sound tally a 97-70 win over Caltech in the final game of the SCIAC Classic on Sunday afternoon.

The Loggers were strong in the paint all afternoon as they outscored Caltech 54-22 in the low blocks while holding a plus-24 rebounding edge. Riggs Yarbro was a key contributor to the visitors cause as he scored a game high 21 points while grabbing eight rebounds.

A sloppy first 20 minutes of the game saw the teams combine for 29 fouls and 25 turnovers. Caltech went 13-for-19 from the foul line while the Loggers converted eight of their 18 attempts from the charity stripe.

The visitors grew their lead to a quick nine points at 15-6 with 14:02 remaining in the period however Caltech got within two points on five occasions over the next 11-plus minutes but couldn't grab the lead. After a Kc Emezie lay-up got the Beavers within 37-33 with just over two minutes left in the half, Puget Sound clamped down defensively and finished the frame on a 7-0 scoring spurt in taking a 44-33 lead at halftime. The 11-point lead at intermission represented the largest lead of the half.

Puget Sound continued to creep ahead in the second half. The Loggers held the home team to three made fields during the first 10 minutes of the second half while tallying eight of their own. They never let Caltech get within single digits during the final 20 minutes.

At the final whistle Puget Sound committed 29 team fouls while Caltech racked up 28. Puget Sound went 21-for-37 from the foul line while the Beavers notched a 29-for-37 effort. Caltech's made and attempted free throws were both season highs.

Michael Edwards went 8-for-8 from the foul line en route to his team high 20-point afternoon. Emezie came off the bench to contribute a 16-point effort on the strength of a 6-for-8 shooting effort.
