Brooklyn, NY- On Monday January 14, 2013, the Medgar Evers College Men's Basketball team defeated their crosstown rival the Saint Joseph's Collegeof Brooklyn Bears 75-70. The Cougars improve to 6-9 Overall while the Bears fall to 9-6 Overall.
Medgar Evers College took an early 2-0 lead. The Bears would score the next 7 points to go up 7-2.Saint Joseph's College would lead by as much as 13pts. The Cougars would make a comeback and with a 3pt. shot by Sophomore Michael Taylor, tied the game at 30pts with 2:41 left in the half. Senior Guard and Captain Jovan Deare would make a basket extending the lead by 2pts. The Bears would regain the lead and go into the break up 34-32.
In the 2nd half, the Cougars Jovan Deare made a couple of baskets which tied the score at 36. Michael Taylor would hit a pair of free throws and the Cougars led 38-36 with 18:32 left in the game. The Cougars never let go of the lead.
In the win, the Cougars were led by Sophomore Guard Michael Taylor with 29pts (3-7 3pt. FG-FGA, 4-4 FT-FTA). Taylor grabbed 5 rebounds, added an assist, and 3 steals. Senior Guard and Captain Jovan Deare scored 24pts (1-2 3pt. FG-FGA, 5-8 FT-FTA). Deare grabbed 14 rebounds, tallied 4 assists, and a steal. Junior Guard Ricco Oliver added 10pts (2-6 3pt. FG-FGA, 2-2 FT-FTA). Oliver added 2 assists, and 2 steals.
The Bears in the loss were led by Jan Rogowski with 20pts. David Louison added 18pts, and Matt O'Neill with 15pts.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday January 16, 2013, when they play the York College Cardinals in CUNYAC action. Game time is 8pm at Medgar Evers College and can be seen live on http://ustream.tv/channel/mecathletics.
