Augsburg beats Macalester 61-51

Augsburg went 21-for-26 from the free throw line (81%) and beat Macalester 61-51 at the Leonard Center.  The Auggies move into a second place tie in the MIAC at 7-2 (12-2 overall), while the Scots are now 4-10 on the season, 1-8 in the MIAC.

 

Macalester received a game-high 16 points from Dylan Kilgour (Fy., La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley), who was 3-for-4 from outside the three-point arc.  Sam Marshall (Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) registered a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  Justin Wasik (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Maine South) added 12 points.

 

Strong defensive play helped Macalester get off to a 9-2 lead and later an 11-6 advantage nine minutes into the opening period.  Augsburg took its first lead since the opening minute when it went on top 16-14 with 7:05 to go and never trailed after that.

 

The Auggies led 28-20 at the break.  Augsburg ran off seven points in a row to turn a nine-point lead into a 54-38 margin with 4:38 to put the game away.

 

In addition to out-scoring Macalester 21-12 from the free throw line, the Auggies also enjoyed a 20-5 advantage in points off turnovers.  Dan Kornbaum and Tyler Schmidt tallied 15 points each to lead Augsburg, while Brett Rasmussen had 12 points and eight rebounds.  Noah Veach grabbed nine boards.

 

Macalester takes on No. 2-ranked and undefeated St. Thomas Wednesday (Jan. 16) at UST.
