WESTON, Mass. – Three players reached double-digits in scoring led by Osanto Marc's (Kissimmee, Fla.) 14 points and nine rebounds, as Regis College defeated Daniel Webster College, 67-52, on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball action. The Pride improves to 3-3 in the NECC and 3-12 overall, while DWC falls to 5-9 and 1-4 in league games.
Marc went 6-for-11 from the field and also added three assists and a pair of steals for the Pride. Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) connected on four three-pointers en route to 12 points, while Evin Matted (Hartford, Conn.) scored 11 points to go with four rebounds. Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.) came off the bench to grab a game-high 10 rebounds, and Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and four assists for the home team.
The Pride opened up a nine point lead on a Peana freethrow to take a 15-6 advantage with 12:45 remaining in the opening period. A jumper by Daniel Webster's Aiden Collins (Paterson, N.J.) followed by a freethrow from Daris Cosby (Columbia, S.C.) made it a 15-9 game, before the Pride scored 13 of the next 18 points to take a 28-14 lead on a pair of Matted freethrows. The Eagles cut it to 11 headed into the break as Collins corralled a miss near the end of the half and buried a fade away jumper as time expired to make it a 32-21 game.
With 13:22 remaining in regulation, Daniel Webster made it a nine point game after a layup by John Hickson (Springfield, Mass.). The teams traded buckets before Chambers buried a three to push the lead back to 12 with 8:43 to play. Ryan Chambers connected again from beyond the arc followed by an Ethan Peana unconventional three-point play to extend the Pride lead to 17 nearly four minutes later.
The Pride lead grew as large as 20 over the final minutes, but a late push by Daniel Webster made it interesting. A three from Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) followed by back-to-back 2-for-2 trips to the freethrow line for Hector Heredia (Lawrence, Mass.) and David Feinstein (Londonderry, N.H.) left it a 65-51 ballgame with only 45 seconds remaining. Nilson Basora's (Nashua, N.H.) freethrow with 19 seconds left cut it to 13, but it was too little too late as Steve Mopsikoff (Palmdale, Calif.) scored with only two seconds remaining to make the final score 67-52.
Regis won the rebounding battle, 46-32, and forced 16 DWC turnovers that led to 20 Regis points. The Pride grabbed 11 steals, led by three steals apiece from Charles and Mike McCloskey (Winter Springs, Fla.).
Daniel Webster was paced by Aiden Collins' 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. John Hickson joined him in double-digits with 10 points, while Daris Cosby, David Feinstein, and Hector Heredia added six points apiece. Dave Schindewolf (Robbinsville, N.J.) scored four points and matched Collins with six rebounds.
The Pride return to action on Saturday afternoon when Regis hosts Elms College in a NECC contest scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Daniel Webster will try and rebound on Thursday night when the Eagles host Newbury College in a 7:30 p.m. game.
