NEW YORK CITY – Sophomore forward Dane McLoughlin (Westerville, Ohio/St. Charles Preparatory) and senior forward Austin Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) each recorded 11 points, but host New York University pulled away in the second half to defeat the Case Western Reserve University men's basketball team, 75-58, in University Athletic Association action Friday evening inside the Jerome S. Coles Center.
The Spartans fall to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the UAA heading into a Sunday afternoon contest with Brandeis University (Mass.) at 12:00 p.m. in Boston. With the victory, the Violets, who were among others receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, improve to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the Association.
In the first half, Case scored the first points of the contest on a jumper from sophomore guard Julien Person (Houston, Texas/Second Baptist), but NYU responded with the next nine en route to building a 19-8 advantage with 11:30 showing on the clock. Then after each side put together brief, 4-0 runs, the Spartans were able to cut the deficit to six, 23-17, via a trey from junior guard Tim Chung (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos) at 7:03. NYU followed with another 4-0 spurt and maintained the lead into the break by a count of 33-24.
In the second, the Spartans hung tough but trailed by double-digits for most of the period. In its last comeback try, Case cut the Violet lead to nine, 47-38, with 12:24 left following a lay-up by sophomore forward Brian Klements (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Willoughby South). However, NYU tallied another 4-0 spurt and pushed the advantage back to 13. That lead grew to as many as 24 (75-51) late in the contest.
In addition to Fowler and McLoughlin, who was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, Klements also finished in double-digits with 10 markers.
Carl Yaffe and Devin Karch led the NYU offensive attack with 17 points apiece.
