LISLE, Ill. - Despite holding an eight-point lead with just over eight minutes left, the Benedictine University men's basketball team could not hold off a charge from Edgewood College, falling 57-51 on Saturday afternoon.

Benedictine netted the first five points of the contest on a Daniel Montano jumper and a three from Michael Woolf. Edgewood hit back-to-back threes to take the lead and the remainder of the first half was tight with three lead changes. Edgewood led by seven at one point but Benedictine tallied a 7-1 run on a Tim McGinty layup, Jamison Montgomery three, and another McGinty layup to claw within a point. Edgewood held a 23-21 lead at the break.

Neither team led by more than three points early in the second half. Raphael Oglesby posted a tip-in to put the host Eagles ahead 38-35 and moments later newcomer Luke Johnson, who had been with the team for just two days after transferring from Carthage, buried a three to extend the lead to 43-37 at the 11:16 mark of the second half. Johnson, who played three minutes in the first half and six in the second, followed with a layup with 8:24 to play, extending the lead to eight at 45-37. Johnson finished with five points, two rebounds, and a block.

Edgewood used a 9-1 run to even the game at 46 apiece with 6:18 remaining. The teams traded threes as Dale Renshaw connected for Benedictine and Luke Thein answered for Edgewood. Benedictine would not score again until a jumper with :15 remaining from another transfer, John Dodson, who came in from Elmhurst, pulled the Eagles within 55-51.

Benedictine held a 38-30 advantage on the glass but shot just 37 percent for the game, missing several open looks. The Eagles did not have a player reach double figures. Renshaw and Montano netted eight each. McGinty tallied seven to go with eight rebounds.

Benedictine (3-13, 1-6) continues a busy stretch of five games in eight days by hosting Concordia Chicago on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles already own a victory over the Cougars earlier this season.
