Free Throws Propel Keuka Past Houghton

Entering Wednesday night's non-conference game against Houghton College, the Keuka College men's basketball team had struggled at the free throw line, connecting on just 61 percent of its free throw attempts.

Keuka dominated at the free throw line versus the Highlanders, setting season-bests in free throws made (43) and attempted (58) during a 77-53 win inside the Nielsen Center in Houghton, NY.

Senior Teddy Tuggles (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili) led all scorers with a season-high 24 points, including making 13 of 17 free throws, as the Storm (5-7) won their second straight.

Sophomore Trevor Healey (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) added 10 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks while making all six of his free throws. Classmate Tyler Hixson (Shortsville, NY/Red Jacket) added nine points and three rebounds and freshman Casey Williams (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) had eight points for the Green and Gold.

Keuka had more free throw attempts (58) than Houghton (0-12) had points (53).

Tuggles scored 12 first-half points as the Storm took a 30-25 halftime lead. Keuka's man-to-man defense limited the Highlanders to 29 percent shooting in the opening half, and just 33.9 percent (19-for-56) for the game.

Sophomore Adam Starks (Wellsville, NY/Andover) and Williams each hit a pair of free throws and Tuggles added a layup as the Green and Gold's lead swelled to 54-39 with 8:50 minutes remaining.

Tuggles hit a driving layup and Hixson added a fast-break layup as Keuka took a 58-44 lead with 6:30 remaining. The Highlanders managed to claw within eight points on a jumper from Chris Enlow with 3:14 remaining, but the Green and Gold hit nine straight free throws as part of an 11-0 run to finish off Houghton.

The Storm host Gallaudet University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, the first of three straight home games.
