Woodmore tallies 24, Astorga adds 21 as VWC defeats Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- DJ Woodmore nailed a pair of free throws with 9:13 remaining to be played in the first half Tuesday to give Virginia Wesleyan College the lead at Bridgewater College and the visiting Marlins never trailed again. The Marlins used a 16-7 run shortly thereafter to help open up a 37-27 lead at halftime en route to posting an 80-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory in BC's Nininger Hall.  Virginia Wesleyan (9-4, 5-0 ODAC) opened its largest lead at 61-45 when Chris Astorga (Suffolk/Virginia Beach Cape Henry Collegiate) hit a triple with 8:35 remaining in the second half.  Bridgewater (8-6, 2-3) managed to keep things close however, and put on final charge that pulled the Eagles within six points (74-68) with 1:26 on the clock following a layup by Tavis Stapleton (Carthage, Texas/Carthage). Astorga answered for VWC however, scoring the final four points of the game to provide the final margin of victory for the Marlins. Woodmore led all scoring with 24 points, nailing 10-of-17 field goal attempts.  Astorga finished with 21 points and Tre' Ford (Falls Church/J.E.B. Stuart)added 10 points.  Woodmore also led VWC on the backboards with 10 rebounds and Ford led floor play with five assists. Ed Reddick (Virginia Beach/Floyd E. Kellam) led Bridgewater with 20 points, followed by Stapleton with 17 points, Ronnie Thomas (Roanoke/Patrick Henry) with 14 and Kenneth Waugh (Wytheville/George Wythe). with 10. Virginia Wesleyan returns to competition on Saturday, Jan. 12, hosting undefeated Randolph College in a showdown of ODAC leaders, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jane P. Batten Student Center. --AMDG--
