Yellowjackets Storm Back For Overtime Triumph

Trent Davis buried a tying three-pointer at the end of regulation during UW-Superior's 80-77 men's basketball win over UW-Oshkosh on Thursday (Jan. 3) in Kolf Sports Center.

In the final 91 seconds of the second half, UW-Superior (6-8/2-3 WIAC) overcame an eight-point deficit with the help of six points from Johnquez Brooks. The Titans (6-7/1-3 WIAC) missed four free throws in the last 50 seconds, while a Davis lay-up pulled his team within 68-65 with 13 seconds on the clock.

UW-Oshkosh turned the ball over with five seconds left, and Davis launched a deep jumper that swished through the net with 0:01 to play.

Bronson Byrne got an offensive rebound and put it back in for a 70-68 lead during overtime. UW-Superior then went ahead, 76-72, on a three-point play from Davis with 3:01 left. Cory Nickel tried a three-point jumper as time ran out, but it was off the mark.

All five Yellowjacket starters scored in double figures. Davis led the way with 17 points, while Brendan Bauer tallied 16, Brooks 13, Jarrod Peterson 12 and Byrne 11. Brooks posted four assists, to go with 11 rebounds and three steals by Byrne.

The first half was quite competitive. Dylan Wurtz knocked down two free throws to give UW-Oshkosh a 14-11 lead.

Davis nailed a long-distance jumper and completed a traditional three-point play to bring UW-Superior back. Brooks swished a mid-range shot while being fouled, and he sank the free throw to put the Yellowjackets up, 31-24.

The Titans rallied with a 12-0 run that featured back-to-back triples from Wurtz. Jade Royston, who assisted on both Wurtz baskets, then drove for a lay-in and the 36-31 lead with 1:45 on the clock.

UW-Superior trailed at halftime, but Bauer booked two inside hoops to regain the lead. Peterson followed with five quick points and Davis nailed a three-ball to put the visitors ahead, 48-40.

Momentum swung back to the Titans, as they scored 19 of the next 22 points. Nickel marked two three-pointers and a lay-up to lead, 50-49. His last bucket was the 100th three-point shot of his career.

Josh Hopfensperger connected from downtown with 4:49 left to make it a 59-51 margin. UW-Oshkosh made just one field goal during the final 9:49 of play.

Royston tied his career-high with 26 points, in addition to seven rebounds and six assists. Nickel counted 17 points and Wurtz had 12. The Titans finished with 39 percent (22-57) overall shooting, with 38 percent (9-24) accuracy from deep and 73 percent marksmanship at the foul line (24-33).

UW-Superior totaled 42 percent shooting, including 7-of-23 conversions (30 percent) beyond the arc and 17-of-25 success on free throws (68 percent).
