GENESEO, NY - The Medaille College men's basketball team was looking to snap a three game skid to open the New Year when they headed to Geneseo State for a non-conference matchup with the Knights. However, the Mavs were unable to pull through in a hotly contested affair as they fell (64-60) in dropping their fourth straight game.
In what was a tightly contested game that saw fourteen lead changes and five ties, the Mavs were unable to connect on a game tying three pointer in the games waning seconds to force overtime. Each team shot well from the floor as the Knights knocked down (54.2%) of their shots while Medaille connected on (47.8%) overall and (41.2%) from beyond the arc.
The Mavs were led by senior Tyler Stevens who posted a team high (12) points, which included a (4 for 7) effort from long distance, to go along with four rebounds. Sophomore Alex Baron netted (11) points on (5 of 7) shooting while Jammal Coleman posted (8) points, (5) assists, and (5) steals in the loss. Senior Anthony Battaglia chipped in with (10) points of his own.
The story of the game was the Mavs inability to gather in rebounds. The hosts outrebounded Medaille (35-16), which included pulling (13) boards off their offensive glass, as opposed to just three offensive rebounds for the Mavs. The Medaille defense forced the Knights into (21) turnovers and were able to turn those miscues into (18) points, but to no avail.
The loss ends a brutal three game non-conference streak against very strong competition. The Mavs will take their (5-6) record back into AMCC play when they take to the road for a pair of conference games this weekend. They will take on Penn State-Altoona on Saturday (1/5) at 3:00pm before heading to Pitt-Greensburg on Sunday (3/6) for another 3:00pm tipoff.
