After an 11-day layoff for the holiday break, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team was faced with their third game in four days on New Year's Eve, hopping across the river to take on the College of St. Scholastica for the second time on the year.  And although it was a little tougher this time, the Yellowjackets got the result they were seeking.

Despite trailing by 14 points late in the first half, the Yellowjackets, paced by Jarrod Peterson (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), who scored 14 in the second half rallied and picked up the five-point win, 64-59, at St. Scholastica's Reif Gym to sweep the two-game season series with their Twin Ports rivals and close out 2012 on a positive note.

St. Scholastica carried the play for most of the first half, trailing for only 18 seconds.  A Peterson layup with 15:48 to play gave the Yellowjackets their only lead of the half at 7-6.  The Saints erased the deficit and went on a 14-4 run to surge ahead 20-11.  The Yellowjacket deficit reached double digits with just under two minutes to play, and with 32 seconds left reached a game-high 14 points.  Johnquez Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) drained a three at the buzzer to pull the Yellowjackets back to within 11 at 39-28 as the teams went to the locker room.

The Saints kept the Yellowjackets down for the first part of the second half, but Peterson hit a three and followed that with a pair of free throws to trim the lead.  Brooks added another three as the Yellowjackets opened the second half on a 14-4 run to pull to within two points at 44-42.  A Peterson layup with 10:58 to play gave the Yellowjackets just their second lead of the game, 45-44.

The Yellowjackets kept their collective foot on the pedal and pushed ahead.  Austin Cahil (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit a pair of three pointers just 29 seconds apart to make the lead eight with 6:48 to play.  The lead was the largest of the game for the Yellowjackets.

After watching the lead evaporate down to one point, the Yellowjackets again pulled away.  Peterson hit a pair of free throws and Brendan Bauer (Eleva, Wis./Gilmanton) laid one in to make it a five-point game, 57-52 with just under three minutes remaining.  Down the stretch Brooks and Peterson closed out the scoring from the free throw line, and the Yellowjackets picked up their second straight win.

It was a tough afternoon shooting-wise for the Yellowjackets, who made just 36.2% of their shots (21-of-58).  Peterson topped all scorers with 19 points.  Brooks added 15 points and Bauer scored ten points and added ten rebounds, his first double-double of the season.  His ten rebounds were tops on the team.  Brooks also added three assists, a team high.

Peterson and Bauer each had three steals and Bronson Byrne (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska), despite only playing 15 minutes, led the Yellowjackets with three blocked shots.

Jonah Dahlman led the Saints with 16 points.

The Yellowjackets (5-8, 1-3 WIAC) have now closed out their non-conference schedule for the season.  They return to WIAC play on Thursday, January 3 when they travel to UW-Oshkosh.  The opening tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
