Randolph-Macon Captures R-MC Coaches Classic with a 76-40 Win over Manhattanville

ASHLAND, VA – The Randolph-Macon College Men's Basketball team captured the 2012 R-MC Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers with a,76-40, victory over Manhattanville Sunday afternoon in Ashland.

R-MC (6-5) shot a blistering 50% from the field, making 33 of its 66 shots on the afternoon and featured four players in double figures led by 15 off the bench from Akeem Holmes. Holmes and the rest of the Randolph-Macon bench outscored the Manhattanville reserves 31-6. 

Andre Simon had 14 points and six rebounds, while Dylan Cole and all-tournament selection Lamar Giggetts each had 12 points.   Cole had a team-high nine rebounds to help R-MC to a 48-33 edge on the boards.    

Giggetts also finished with four rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals in the win.   Marcus Badger matched Giggetts with four assists as R-MC combined for 19 helpers as a team.

With the Yellow Jackets up 12-6 four minutes into the contest, R-MC  went on a 23-9 run, taking a 35-15 advantage following a Holmes bucket with just over five minutes to play in the half.  

The Yellow Jackets fashioned a 37-20 lead at halftime and then held Manhattanville to just one field goal in the first eight and a half minutes of the second stanza.  R-MC would outscore the Valiants 14-2 during that span to take a 29 point lead with less than 14 minutes to play in the game.

R-MC held Manhattanville (7-4) to just 25.1% from the floor on 15-of-58 shooting.   The Yellow Jackets also forced the Valiants into 19 turnovers, which led to 19 R-MC points.   Connor Sullivan was named the tournament's most outstanding player after he tied a career-high with 17 points on Saturday and had five points on Sunday.  

Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Wednesday when its hosts Gettysburg College at 7:00 p.m.
