ATLANTA -- 2012 came to a screeching end for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's basketball team on Sunday as the Marlins dropped a 92-82 overtime decision to the host Eagles of Emory University. While Emory (8-2) won for the fourth consecutive time, the Marlins (7-3) lost their third straight game, marking the program's first three-game losing skid since the 2008-09 season. Emory scored the first five points of the game and led until the final minutes when Virginia Wesleyan junior DJ Woodmore (Virginia Beach/Landstown) hit a pair of jumpers to give the Marlins the lead at 72-70 and 74-72, the latter with 12 seconds remaining to be played. But, Emory came back each time and tied the game with four seconds on the clock when McPherson Moore (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day) scored on a layup. The teams entered overtime and Emory started on a 4-0 run, but once again Virginia Wesleyan stayed close, this time with the help of timely scores from senior Chris Teasley (Newport News/Menchville), keeping the Marlins within two points the last time with 1:26 on the clock. Emory used a 7-0 surge to put the game away after that. Virginia Wesleyan hit 10-of-24 triples in the game, led by Woodmore and Teasley with three each. Emory out-scored VWC 19-12 from the free throw lines, led by Moore's 7-of-7 showing. Virginia Wesleyan finished with a 40-37 edge in rebounding, but turned the ball over 17 times, as compared to just 14 by the Eagles. Emory's balanced offense was key to the upset as the Eagles put five players in double-figure scoring, led by Jake Davis (Cincinnati, Ohio/The Seven Hills School) with 20 points, Michael Friedberg (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) and Moore with18 each. Alex Greven (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) added 15 points and Michael Florin (Port Washington, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) tallied 12. The Eagles knocked down 50.8% of their field goal attempts, while VWC hit 41.7%. Woodmore led all scoring with 24 points, but was one of only three Marlins in double-figure scoring. Teasley added 19 points and senior Chris Astorga (Suffolk/Virginia Beach Cape Henry Collegiate)scored 14. After that, scoring dropped off to seven points tallied by junior Colby Heard (Virginia Beach/Tallwood). Virginia Wesleyan competes again on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference game at Newport News Apprentice. --AMDG--
