Hot Winter in Florida as Cortland Routs Ursinus, 85-53

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Senior Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre/South Side) scored 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-9 accuracy from three-point range, as Cortland defeated Ursinus College, 85-53, at the Land of Magic Classic. The Red Dragons (8-1) will play Embry-Riddle University, the host school, Sunday at 6 p.m. in the pre-determined schedule of the eight-team, two-game tournament.

Winter also finished the game with four assists. He scored 18 of his points in the first half to help Cortland take a 50-27 lead at the break. Senior Harrison Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) ended with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds and junior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) added 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks.

Also for the Red Dragons, senior Brian Manning (Elmira/Southside) scored eight points and grabbed five boards, while junior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) and sophomore Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored seven points each. Herron also totaled five rebounds and three assists and senior Jeremy Smith (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy) shared the team lead with four assists.

Jesse Krasna led Ursinus (5-6) with 14 points. Matt Donahue scored nine points and Malik Draper added eight points. Ryan Adams scored six points and led the Bears with six rebounds.

Cortland shot 56 percent from the field in the first half (19-of-34), including 43 percent (9-of-21) from three-point range. The Red Dragons finished at 49 percent from the field and 38 percent (14-of-37) from the arc. Ursinus shot only 33 percent from the field and 25 percent (4-of-16) from long distance.

Cortland raced out to a 15-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, with Winter scoring seven points in that stretch. The Red Dragons led by 21 points at 34-13 with 7:53 left in the half and by at least 16 points the rest of the half. Ursinus was no closer than 21 points in the second half.
