Clark Hits Jumper to Buzzer to Give Thomas More a 99-97 Double Overtime Win Over Spalding

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Sophomore shooting guard Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Walnut Hills) hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Thomas More College men's basketball team a 99-97 double overtime win over Spalding University today (Saturday, December 15, 2012) in a non-conference game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 8-1 overall and with the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 3-4 overall.

Thomas More jumped out to a 5-0 lead when senior point guard Ryan Hamm (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) made a three-pointer with 18:05 to play in the first half.  Spalding answered with an 8-2 run to take an 8-7 lead on a Johnell Hardin jumper with 14:15 to play in the opening half.  Thomas More responded with a 21-9 run capped by a lay-up by junior small forward Brandon Housley (Covington, Ky./Holmes) to give the Saints a 28-17 lead with 6:55 to play in the half.  Spalding came right back with a 22-12 run to take a 39-36 lead with 58-seconds to play in the half when Dewhon McAfee made a three-pointer.  Junior shooting guard Cameron Clemons (Louisville, Ky./Doss) made two free-throws with 39-seconds to play in the half to cut the lead to 39-38.

The Saints opened the second half on a 7-4 run to take a 45-43 lead with 17:42 to play in the second half when Housley scored on a dunk.  Spalding put together a 17-7 run to build a 60-52 lead with 9:22 to play in regulation when Hardin made a lay-up.  Thomas More answered with a 24-12 run to take a 76-72 lead with 36-seconds to play in the second half when junior point guard Spencer Berlekamp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) made a lay-up.  Spalding closed out regulation on a 5-1 run to force overtime at 77-77 when McAfee made a jumper with four-seconds to play in regulation.

Thomas More opened the first overtime on a 7-2 run to take an 84-79 lead with 1:57 to play in the overtime period when sophomore shooting guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made a three-pointer.  The Golden Eagles took an 87-86 lead with 21-seconds to play when McAfee made two free-throws.  Housley made one-of-two free-throws for the Saints with six-seconds to play in the first overtime to force a second overtime at 87-87.

Spalding used a 7-4 run to jump out to a 94-91 lead with 3:06 to play in the second overtime when Will Barber made a three-pointer.  Thomas More answered with a 6-0 run to take a 97-94 lead on a Clark dunk with 34-seconds to play in the second overtime.  McAfee made a three-pointer with 22-seconds to play in the second overtime period to tie the game at 97-97, but the Saints' Clark banked in a jumper at the buzzer to give the Saints the 99-97 victory.

Thomas More had five players in double-figure scoring as Mumford had 24 points, Housley had 13 points and Hamm, Clark and junior small forward Josef Marshall (Dayton, Ohio/Trotwood Madison) all finished with 12 points each.  Housley led the team on the boards with eight rebounds, while Hamm, Berlekamp and Mumford led the team in assists with four each.

Thomas More is idle until next Saturday (December 22) when it travels to Lexington, Kentucky to play Transylvania University at 1 p.m.
