Blugold Men's Basketball Falls to Yellowjackets in Zorn

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) – In a game with both teams looking for their first conference win, the UW-Eau Claire men's basketball team came up short to UW-Superior 75-53 on Ken Anderson Court in Zorn Arena tonight.

Superior opened the game outscoring the Blugolds 11-2 over the first three and a half minutes and while the score was tied at one point early, the Yellowjackets never trailed the entire night.

The Blugolds got as close as two points nine minutes into the contest but Superior used a 14-8 run to reach its first double-digit lead of the night (32-22) with less than six minutes left in the first half. The closest the Blugolds would get the rest of the night was nine points with over a minute left in the half.

Superior steadily increased its advantage throughout the second half as they outscored Eau Claire 35-23. The Yellowjackets reached their largest lead of the night at 27 points (75-48) with just over four minutes to play. The Blugolds scored the final five points of the night, holding Superior scoreless over the last four minutes.

The Blugolds shot just 33.3 percent (20-for-60) from the field while Superior went 28-for-49 (57.1 percent). Eleven of Superior's shots came from beyond the arc while Eau Claire had just four three-pointers. The Yellowjackets also outrebounded Eau Claire 32-28 but committed more turnovers than the Blugolds, 14-11.

Dustin Kalien (Sr.-Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chi-Hi) led the Blugolds with nine points while Nick Craggs (Sr.-Kimberly, Wis.) and Andy Kleist (Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis./North) both had four rebounds to lead Eau Claire.

The Blugolds drop to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in the conference while Superior improves to 3-6 on the season and 1-3 in WIAC play.

Saturday the Blugolds will be home for the final time before a two-week break for the holiday. Eau Claire will take on Ashford University (Iowa) beginning at 3 p.m.
