NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team improved to 3-0 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play and 5-1 overall after an 80-65 win against Hunter College at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
John Jay had four players score in double figures and the Bloodhounds were led by Isaiah Holman with 19 points, six rebounds and six steals. Meanwhile Darryl Dennis added 14 points. Jamar Harry had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Michael Howard added 12 points and six assists.
Hunter was led by Lorenzo Brown with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting with nine rebounds and five steals, while Taulant Ibraj had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Hawks.
The host Bloodhounds never trailed in the contest en route to their fourth win in a row.
After Hunter managed to stay within single digits of the Bloodhound lead most of the first half, John Jay put together a big rally to establish a double digit lead in the final five minutes of the first half. After having a 25-19 lead with 5:02 to play, John Jay closed out the first half outscoring the Hawks 19-8 to take a 44-27 halftime lead. A buzzer beater by Holman, who banked in a shot as time expired, capped off a brilliant end of the first half for John Jay.
The Bloodhounds then opened the second half on a 6-0 run to take a 50-27 lead with 18:14 remaining and John Jay maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
The Bloodhounds led by more than 16 through the first eighteen minutes of the second half en route to the win. The Hawks put together a mild run in the final few minutes to get their deficit to as little as 12 with 1:23 remaining as John Jay led 77-65 at that point. But the run was too late as John Jay cruised to the fifteen point win.
John Jay forced Hunter into 27 turnovers and collected 17 steals. Besides Holman's six, Harry and Swindon Charles added three steals each, while Dennis had two stealss. Charles added nine rebounds in the win.
After a few weeks off from competition, John Jay returns to action on Tue. Dec. 27 for a game at Yeshiva University at 8 p.m.
