NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Turnovers and cold shooting cost the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team (4-6) in an 82-68 non-conference loss to Hamilton College (5-4) on Tuesday evening at the Hawk Center. Three Hawk players reached double figures, while four accomplished the same feat for the Continentals.

Hamilton shot 53.9 percent (7-of-13) from three-point range in the first half and wound up shooting 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from distance for the contest. The Hawks were hurt by 36.5 percent (23-of-63) shooting from the floor, the worst of which came in the first half (14-of-30 for 46.7 percent). Each team committed 17 turnovers, while New Paltz held a 38-31 edge on the glass.

New Paltz had its largest lead of the game (three) twice in the first five minutes of play, the second of which came after junior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) hit a pair of free throws. Hamilton went on a 15-3 run, though, and after Bradley Gifford hit his second three-pointer of the spurt, junior guard Andrew Joseph(Brooklyn, N.Y./High School of Art and Design) broke things up with a pair of made free throws. The Continentals continued to keep a large advantage, and a Peter Kazickas jumper with 38 seconds left in the first period ensured a 41-26 halftime lead for Hamilton.

The Hawks showed signs of life coming out of the break, as senior forward Matt Devine (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) and senior guard/forward Shereef Taylor (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) combined for five points in a 5-0 Hawk run, but the Continentals countered with a 7-0 spurt. New Paltz's closest deficit of the half came at its end, with freshman forward Kevin Roach (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) scoring on back-to-back possessions to make it a 14-point game. Hamilton ran out the clock in the final 25 seconds, and the Continentals walked out of the Hawk Center with a non-league win.

Devine led the Hawks with 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists, while freshman forward Deveino McRae(Bronx, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) chipped in 13 points and six boards. Roach also reached double figures with a career-high 12 points coming off the bench. Joseph had a well-rounded game, boasting game-highs in rebounds with eight and steals with three.

For Hamilton, Matt Hart paved the way with 17 points, while fellow starters Greg Newton and Ken Click added 16 and 12 points, respectively. Kazickas shot 5-of-6 from the line coming off the bench, contributing 14 points total. Click had three blocks to pace the Continentals' defense in the frontcourt, as the team boasted seven total.

New Paltz is idle through the Intercession break and returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 4, as it takes on Delaware Valley College at 7 p.m. in Doylestown, Pa. It marks the team's first game outside of New York this season.
