Elmhurst Upends Webster For First Victory

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Elmhurst men's basketball team scored its first win of the 2012-13 season with a convincing 87-70 victory over Webster University.

Elmhurst (1-5) fell behind 22-14 nine minutes into the opening half, but the Bluejays ripped off a 15 straight points to open up a 29-22 lead with 8:28 left in the half. Webster (4-4) trimmed the Bluejays' lead down to six points with a minute to play, but five straight points from Nick Sanford in the closing minute gave Elmhurst a 47-36 lead at halftime.

The Bluejays opened the second half on a 24-13 run over the first eight minutes to open up a 71-49 lead. Webster trimmed the lead down to 14 points but came no closer as Elmhurst cruised to the 17-point victory.

After struggling with their outside shooting for the first five games, the Bluejays finished red hot against the Gorloks. Elmhurst shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from downtown and 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the floor. Webster finished the game shooting 56.3 percent (27-of-48) from the field, including 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from beyond the arc. Elmhurst's defense forced the Gorloks into 21 turnovers and the Bluejays scored 34 points off of Webster's mistakes. Elmhurst also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Webster 30-24.

Four Bluejays reached double figures in scoring. Nick Sanford led the Bluejays with a season-high 25 points while shooting 9-of-14 from the floor. Sanford registered a double-double by pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. Bryant Ackerman came off the bench to total 15 points and six assists. Ackerman was a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown. Taylor Baxter chipped in with 14 points and four assists while D'Ante Foster scored 13, hitting three three-pointers in the process. Alex Morgunov added nine points and Kyle Wuest scored six.

Webster was led by Cody Bradfisch's 19 points on a 7-of-10 shooting performance. Roman Robinson added 18 points and Aaron Griffin totaled eight points and seven rebounds.

Elmhurst hosts Lawrence University on Wednesday (December 12) at 7:00 p.m.
