Men's Basketball Wins Third Straight; Goes Wire-to-Wire in Win over Rival Brooklyn

More news about: York (N.Y.)

BROOKLYN, N.Y.—  The York College men's basketball team picked up its third straight win, leading wire-to-wire in a 66-59 victory over heated-rival Brooklyn College at the West Quad Center in Brooklyn Thursday evening.

York (4-4, 1-1 CUNYAC) led the entire way thanks in part to a 10-0 run to start the game.  Though the Cardinals didn't light up the scoreboard initially, they held Brooklyn scoreless for the first 6:55 of the contest and got a pair of buckets from Thomas Hart and Terell Roper following an opening basket by Tony Vails

From there, the Cardinals held a comfortable lead for nearly the entire game until Brooklyn made things interesting down the stretch. A Shamir Wilkinson dunk with 4:53 to play in the game gave the Cardinals a 56-47 lead.  But Brooklyn followed with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to just one point.  A pair of three-pointers by Brooklyn's Steven Diaz helped key the run.

But York's Michael Trowers helped squash Brooklyn's momentum when he responded with a three-pointer with 1:56 to play to give York a 61-57 cushion.  Brooklyn closed to within two following a pair of made free throws and had a chance to tie on its next possession but could not convert.  With the shot clock shut off at this point, Brooklyn was forced to foul Vails, who drained both free throws with 28 seconds left to put the Cardinals back up by four (63-59).  Brooklyn could not convert again on its next possession and another pair of York free throws helped seal the win.

The Cardinals were paced once again by Vails who finished with a game-high 23 points and extended his streak of 20+ points to eight games. Vails also chipped in five assists and five boards.  Wilkinson added eight points and nine boards and Roper finished with 10 points.  Du'Quan Lawsonhanded out seven assists and swiped five steals.

Brooklyn (1-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) was led by Kavon Baker who had 18 points and five boards.  Jeffrey Noel finished with 16 points off the bench.

York will return to action on Saturday with a home game against William Paterson University. Tip-off for that game is 1:00 p.m.
