La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team fell 64-52 to second-ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, drop to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC while the Warhawks improve to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the conference. UW-Whitewater has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with UW-L.
The Warhawks raced out to a 7-2 lead with 18:44 remaining after a Cody Odegaard three-point field goal. UW-Whitewater led 12-8 after another Odegaard three-pointer, but UW-L scored the next five points to take its first lead of the game at 13-12 with 13:55 left in the half. Jeff Heiden hit a three-pointer and Lucas Morrissey a jumper to give UW-L the lead.
Luke Knoble gave UW-Whitewater a 14-13 lead with 11:57 remaining and the Warhawks would not trail the rest of the game. UW-Whitewater led 33-24 with 1:24 left in the half before UW-L finished the half scoring the final five points to cut the lead to 33-29 at intermission.
UW-Whitewater led 43-37 with 13:47 remaining when it went on a 8-0 run to lead 51-37. UW-L could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game as the Eagles shot 37.5% (nine-of-24) from the field in the second half, including 20.0% (one-of-five) from three-point range.
Heiden led UW-L with 17 points Wednesday, finishing six-of-11 from the field, including two-of-five from three-point range, and three-of-four at the free throw line. Luke Tweedfinished with 11 points and three blocks while Morrissey had 10 points and nine rebounds. Lucas Collom had a game-high 10 rebounds while finishing with four points.
UW-L shot 41.2% from the field, including 38.5% (five-of-13) from three-point range, and 83.3% (five-of-six) at the free throw line.
Knoble led UW-Whitewater with 17 points and eight rebounds while Quardell Young had 11 points.
The Warhawks, ranked second on the D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll and the defending NCAA Division III champion, shot 43.5% from the field, including 15.4% (two-of-13) from three-point range. UW-Whitewater shot 66.7% (eight-of-12) at the line.
UW-L returns to action Saturday, December 8 at UW-Superior at 3 p.m.
