GENESEO, N.Y. – Geneseo broke open a tight game with a 12-0 run in the final eight minutes, then held off a late rally in which the Red Dragons' missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer in the final seconds, and the Knights defeated previously unbeaten Cortland, 70-66.

Matt Curry led Geneseo (4-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) with 17 points. Gordon Lyons added 10 points, Connor Fedge tallied nine points and Ryan Riefenhauser finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Junior Kevin McMahon led Cortland (5-1, 2-1 SUNYAC) with a career-high 22 points along with seven rebounds. He made 9-of-12 shots from the floor and all four of his foul shots. Senior Brian Manning hit 2-of-3 three-pointers and finished with 10 points. Sophomore Lamard Herron scored eight points and dished out six assists and senior Jesse Winter had nine points and three assists.

Cortland was within 53-52 after a McMahon jumper with 7:43 left. Just over a minute later, the Knights started their run with two Riefenhauser free throws, followed at the 5:44 mark with a Riefenhauser put-back jumper. A Fedge three-pointer with 4:56 left and a Curry layup at the 4:13 mark extended the lead to 10. Riefenhauser added a layup with 4:04 remaining, and the lead grew to 13 at 65-52 after a Jordan Jones foul shot with 3:35 left.

The Red Dragons still trailed by 12 at 68-56 with less than two minutes remaining, but cut the lead to single digits on a McMahon three-point play with 1:52 left. After two Geneseo missed free throws, McMahon scored with 1:37 on the clock. The Knights then committed a foul to turn the ball back over to the Red Dragons, and senior Jeremy Smith buried a three-pointer with 1:29 left to cut the lead to 68-64.

Cortland's fullcourt pressure following a timeout resulted in a Herron steal and layup with 1:15 left that made it a two-point game. The Red Dragons then held the Knights on their next possession and called timeout at midcourt with less than 26 seconds remaining. Cortland's possession eventually resulted in the ball being kicked out to Smith on the right wing, but his potential go-ahead trey rimmed out and Geneseo secured the rebound and was fouled with less than six seconds left. Riefenhauser made two foul shots to seal the win.

Cortland shot 47 percent from the floor and 10-of-10 from the foul line, but hit only 4-of-12 three-pointers. Geneseo made 46 percent of its shots, including 8-of-18 from three-point range.

Cortland will travel to SUNYIT for a non-league game on Friday, Dec. 7, at 8 p.m.
