DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Delaware Valley College scored 10 straight points and 13 of the final 16 as the Aggies overcame a seven-point deficit and defeated visiting Eastern University, 69-66, in a Freedom Conference contest.
The win improved Delaware Valley to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference while the Eagles fell to 1-5 and 0-2.
Eastern led for most of the contest, including a 36-30 score at halftime. The Eagles upped the advantage to seven, 54-47, with 12:13 remaining, but Delaware Valley responded with seven of the next nine points to pull to within two. Eastern scored the next four before a monster, follow-up jam by the Aggies' Jeremy Beckett made it a four-point contest. After a timeout, the Eagles came right down the court and answered with a three-point play inside by Anthony Parenti for a 63-56 Eastern lead with 4:35 remaining.
The rest of the contest belonged to Delaware Valley. Francis Arnold hit one of two free throws, but teammate Daulton Derr grabbed the rebound on the miss and kicked it out to Arnold. Arnild then drained the 3-pointer to make it a four-point score. After an Eagle turnover, Delaware Valley's Jay Donovan went to the line and sank a pair. Eastern missed two free throws and Arnold drove through the paint and hit a layup with 2:08 remaining to give the Aggies their first lead since they were up 13-12 with 10:50 left in the first half.
After an Eagle miss at the other end, Derr nailed a trey from the top of the key to put Delaware Valley up four, 67-63. Eastern's Kyle Malloy hit inside with 1:06 remaining and, after an Aggie miss, the Eagles had the ball with 40 seconds to go. Anthony Parenti was fouled with 21 ticks left, but he hit just one of two from the line to leave Delaware Valley up one, 67-66. Donovan was fouled shortly after, but he hit just one of two from the line. Eastern had a long look at a go-ahead 3-pointer that clanked off the rim. Beckett grabbed the board, was fouled and hit one of two attempts for the 69-66 final.
Beckett finished the afternoon with 20 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Most of his damage came at the foul line as he went 12-for-16. Arnold and Derr had 13 points apiece while Donovan also hit double digits with 10 points.
Tyler Stowers paced Eastern with 14 points while Malloy had 13 points and 13 boards. Caleb Knudsen came off the bench to add 10 points in the loss.
