Old Westbury Runs Away From Mount in Second Half

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – SUNY College at Old Westbury continued its early season statement as a top contender in the Skyline Conference with a 91-74 victory over Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers moved to 4-1 overall (2-0 Skyline), while the Knights dropped back to 3-3 (1-1 Skyline).

Mount Saint Mary College junior Joe Stabach (Staten Island, N.Y.) swished a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the first half to send the Knights to the locker room trailing by just one, 40-39. Old Westbury junior Kerel Mitchell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit from long range to open the second half for the Panthers, but Mount junior Joe Henain (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) answered with back-to-back buckets to tie the game at 43.

The next three minutes would prove to be decisive, as Old Westbury rattled off 11 consecutive points. Junior Rashawn McCarthy (Westbury, N.Y.) opened the run with back-to-back triples and sophomore Josh Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with the next five to send the Panthers to a 54-43 advantage with 15:49 to play.

Mount senior Lenny Ragaglia (Staten Island, N.Y.) answered with consecutive three-pointers for the Mount to cut the deficit back to five and when Henain banked home a layup with 11:46 remaining, the Knights trailed by just three (59-56).

Leading by five, Old Westbury stretched the lead back to double digits with a mini 6-0 run as the clock ticked below eight minutes. Henain's dunk with 6:42 remaining brought the Mount back to within ten, but Old Westbury answered once again. McCarthy and sophomore Omari Trebuse (Brooklyn, N.Y.) connected on consecutive three-pointers to push the advantage to 16. The Knights got as close as eight in the closing minutes, but never really threatened before allowing Old Westbury to pull away for a 17-point win.

Henain led the Knights with 20 points on 7-of-8 from the field and also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Stabach hit four times from three to finish with 15 points, while Howell totaled 13 points and four assists.

Hill scored a game-high 24 points for the Panthers on 11-of-15 from the field. Mitchell hit four triples and finished with 22 points, while junior Tyrik Tucker (Brooklyn, N.Y.) completed a monster double-double with 20 points and 16 boards. McCarthy also reached double figures with 13 points.

Mount Saint Mary College returns to action on Monday with a Skyline game at Yeshiva. The tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in New York City.
