St. Olaf rallies late past Macalester

St. Olaf out-scored Macalester 8-1 over the final 1:20 to escape with a 75-70win over the Scots in a hot-contested battle at the Leonard Center Saturday afternoon.   Macalester drops to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC, while the Oles move to 3-2 on the season, 2-0 in MIAC play.

 

The Scots knocked down six of their first eight three-point bombs and struck quickly for leads of 14-4 and 20-8 before St. Olaf rallied with 15 straight points to go up 23-20 with just under seven minutes to go in the half.  Mac was on top 34-33 at the halftime break.

 

The lead for was never greater than five points throughout the entire second period and in the half there were five lead changes and four ties.    Mac led 69-67 on a pair of Justin Wasik free throws with 1:37 to play, but the Oles netted the game's next seven points.

 

Pierce Peters (Sr., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) knocked down three from behind the arc and finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and two blocks to lead the Macalester cause.  Justin Wasik (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Maine South) came off the bench to spark his team with a season-high 15 points.  Dylan Kilgour (Fy., La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) added nine points and three assists and Sam Marshall (Sr., Sun Prairie, Wis.) grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

 

Peter moves into the No. 6 position on the school's career scoring list with 1,230 points.  He passes Dwain Chamberlain (1992-96) on the chart.

 

The Oles, who extend their winning streak over Macalester to 12, were led by Connor Gunderson with 23 points and Justin Pahl with 16.  St. Olaf had a 24-11 advantage in turnovers and 16-9 lead in offensive boards.

 

Macalester makes the trip to Collegeville next Wednesday (Dec. 5) to take on St. John's in the team's final game until Dec. 30.
