Hot Shooting Manhattanville Downs Eastern in Freedom Opener

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Led by juniors Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) and Colin Campbell (Miami, Fla./LaSalle) with 21 points apiece, the Manhattanville men's basketball team shot 55.6 percent as a team on the way to an 87-72 victory over Eastern in both teams' Freedom Conference opener on Wednesday night at Eagle Gym.

Bramswig had another great game on both ends of the floor for Manhattanville, shooting 9 of 14 from the field (including his fourth straight game with a three-pointer) and adding 12 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. He also chipped in a career-high four blocks and a steal as well. Campbell hit 8 of 10 shots from the field on his way to a career-high 21 points, adding three assists, two rebounds and a steal.

Freshman Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) also continued his strong start to the year with 17 points, four steals and three assists, while graduate student Craig Augustine (Citrus, Fla./Citrus) pitched in with seven points and nine rebounds.

Eastern started the game by scoring five of the game's first seven points, but Manhattanville rattled off the next 12 points to open up a 14-5 advantage. After six straight Eagle points lowered the deficit to four, the Valiants turned up the defensive intensity again, scoring 14 straight points over the next 4:44 to build up a 28-10 edge with 8:80 remaining. Campbell had six points and Maestre added four to lead the visitors during the run, while the Valiants forced Eastern into 0-for-7 shooting with seven turnovers.

The Valiant lead grew to as many as 20 with 6:12 remaining, when Bramswig grabbed an offensive rebound and slammed the ball home for a 33-13 lead. Eastern went on a 15-4 run to close the half, but Manhattanville still went into halftime with a 37-28 lead.

Manhattanville was never severely challenged in the second half, as the Valiants shot an impressive 63.0 percent (17 for 27) from the field over the final 20 minutes to keep the home team at bay. The lead shrunk to eight points less than two minutes into the half on a three by Anthony Parenti, but Campbell responded with a three-point play on the next possession to get the lead back to 11, and it never reached single digits for the rest of the evening.

Campbell also gave Manhattanville its biggest lead of the night by sinking a three-pointer with 3:27 left, putting the visitors up 21 at 83-62.

For the evening, Manhattanville had an excellent time shooting the ball, finishing at 55.6 percent (30 for 54) from the field and a stellar 7 of 10 from beyond the arc. Eastern finished the night at 41.0 percent (25 for 61) from the field.

Manhattanville (4-1, 1-0 Freedom) will finish the 2012 portion of its Freedom Conference schedule on Saturday, as the Valiants host Misericordia in a conference clash starting at 3 p.m. The game will be video streamed live on GoValiants.TV starting at approximately 2:55 p.m.
