NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) exploded for a game-high 29 points and graduate student Craig Augustine (Citrus, Fla./Citrus) sunk the game-winning free throws with four seconds left in overtime to lead the Manhattanville men's basketball team to a hard-fought 68-66 (OT) victory over host Mount St. Mary in a non-conference matchup on Monday night at the Kaplan Center.

Maestre had a huge game offensively for the Valiants, shooting 9 of 18 from the field, including a 5-of-8 mark from beyond the arc, while also hitting all six of his free throws. Junior Jack Bramswig (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) also reached double figures in points and rebounds for the third straight game, netting 15 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Both players played a key role in the overtime session, where the Valiants gutted out the win.

In overtime, the teams traded baskets in the opening minute to keep the score tied. After a Knight free throw, Bramswig sunk a jumper on the Valiants' third chance of a possession to put the visitors up 64-63 with 2:43 left, but Ryan Straub responded with a three to put the Knights back up two with two minutes to go.

Maestre was fouled and sunk two free throws to even the score at 66 with less than a minute left, and Bramswig cleaned up the boards after a MSMC miss to give the Valiants a chance. Maestre missed a shot with four seconds left, but Augustine grabbed a huge offensive rebound and was sent to the line, where he sunk two freebies to put the Valiants ahead.

Mount Saint Mary called a timeout but could not get a final shot off, sending the Valiants to the victory.

In addition to Maestre and Bramswig, Augustine added six points and eight rebounds, while freshman Andrew Winter (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) chipped in eight points, a season-high 12 rebounds and two blocks.

Straub had a team-leading 14 points for Mount St. Mary, followed by Joe Stabach with 13 points and eight rebounds and Donte Howell with 11 points.

The game did not start out well for the visitors, as Manhattanville had six missed shots and two turnovers on its first eight possessions as Mount St. Mary jumped out to an early 11-0 lead. The Valiants finally got on the board off a set play coming out of a timeout, as Maestre lobbed the ball toward the rim to Bramswig for an alley-oop jam.

The Knight lead got all the way up to 12 points at 30-18 with eight minutes remaining in the half on a jumper by Stabach.

But that would be the last points of the half for the home team, as Manhattanville clamped down defensively and forced MSMC into 0-for-13 shooting the rest of the way. Meanwhile, the Valiants scored 17 consecutive points – getting 11 from Maestre, three from Bramswig, two from Augustine and one from sophomore Wills Flynn (Miami, Fla./Westminster Christian) – to amazingly go into the locker rooms with a 35-30 lead.

Chris Pisciotta finally broke the streak for the home team 32 seconds into the second half, trimming the Valiant lead to three at 35-32.

Manhattanville held onto a slight lead for the first seven minutes, but an 11-2 run for the home team gave them their biggest lead of the second half, a 45-41 edge with 11:58 remaining. A three-pointer by Winter and a layup from Bramswig put the Valiants back up by one, and the teams traded leads on a few occasions before a layup by MSMC's Joe Henain with 1:56 left knotted the score at 60.

After the Valiants did not score on a pair of possessions, Straub grabbed an offensive rebound to set up one final possession for the home team, but the Valiant defense held firm and Howell missed a jumper to send the game into overtime, where the Valiants were able to prevail.

Manhattanville did not shoot the ball particularly well from the field, hitting at only a 31.1 percent (23 for 74) clip, but did hit 8 of 18 shots (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc. Mount St. Mary was not much better at 35.1 percent (26 for 74) from the field, but also hit only nine of its 33 attempts from long range.

Manhattanville (3-1) will start up Freedom Conference play on Wednesday night, as the Valiants travel to St. Davids, Pa., to take on Eastern beginning at 8 p.m.
