The New York University men's basketball team improved to 4-0 with a 69-58 victory over Hamilton College in the championship game of the Hamilton Thanksgiving Tournament on Sunday, November 25, at Hamilton's Scott Field House in Clinton, NY.
The Violets finished a tightly contested first half with a flourish. After Hamilton (2-2) pulled to within three points at 28-25 with 28 seconds to go, Cory Stockmal recorded consecutive steals in the backcourt to lead a quick 5-0 run to end the half. The Continentals would pull within two with 13:29 to play in the second half, but NYU (4-0) would never relinquish the lead, which extended to as large as 14 points with 5:32 remaining.
Highlights
- Carl Yaffe led NYU with 22 points and earned Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors. Yaffe also paced the Violets in their first-round win over Utica with 14 points.
- Devin Karch joined Yaffe on the All-Tournament team, scoring 15 points on 7-10 shooting.
- Max Wein also scored in double figures and narrowly missed a double-double. He totaled 10 points and nine rebounds while going 8-10 from the free-throw line.
- Kyle Stockmal tallied a game-high seven assists for the Violets while chipping in with seven points.
"I think we did a really good job of following our defensive game plan today," said Head Coach Joe Nesci. "I was really happy with how both Carl and Devin played. Carl made some big shots from inside and outside, and Devin did a great job executing the offense and guarding a very big Hamilton center.
"I'm thrilled to win this tournament - these were two good games for us away from home against solid opponents," Nesci continued. "We were able to get good play not only from our starters but from our reserves, and I see this weekend's wins as a total team effort."
The Violets return to the court on Monday, December 3, when they host New Jersey City University at the Coles Sports Center. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm.
