UW-La Crosse Earns Fourth Straight Win

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned a 69-58 victory over Luther College (Iowa) Sunday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season for the first time since 2009-10 while the Norse fall to 3-1 on the year. It was the first meeting between the teams since 2002-03. 

 Featuring two undefeated teams, the first half had 11 lead changes and eight ties. Each team led by as many as four points in the first half, including Luther scoring the final four points of the half to lead 35-31. The Norse shot 59.3% (16-of-27) from the field in the first half, but had eight turnovers. Tyler Wedemeier (13) and Zach Matos (12) combined for 25 first half points. Each had five rebounds.

UW-L shot 36.4% (12-of-33) from the field in the first half, including 10.0% (one-of-10) from three-point range. The Eagles had one turnover in the first 20 minutes.

The Eagles took a 43-39 lead with 14:05 remaining in the game on a three-point play from Michael Barrett, but the Norse cut the lead to 43-42 on a Matos' three-point field goal. UW-L then went on a 10-2 run to lead 53-44 with 9:53 remaining.

Luther cut the lead to 55-52 on Wedemeier's three-point play with 6:43 left and Brian Nnaoji's layup made it 55-54 with 5:28 left. UW-L's Jeff Heiden followed with a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 58-54 advantage before Matos made a jumper to cut the lead back to two points. Heiden then hit his second consecutive three-pointer with 4:24 remaining to make it 61-56.

Lucas Morrissey put-back his own miss with 3:13 remaining to give UW-L a 63-56 lead. Heiden hit four straight free throws to give the Eagles a 67-56 advantage with :51 left. The Norse missed seven of their final eight shots from the field. 

Lucas Collom led UW-L with his first career double-double, finishing with 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He was nine-of-16 from the field. Heiden totaled 18 points, including going three-of-six from three-point range and five-of-six at the line. Barrett finished with 13 points while Morrissey had eight points and eight rebounds. 

UW-L shot 36.9% from the field, including 20.0% (four-of-20) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 89.5% (17-of-19) at the free throw line. 

The Eagles finished with two turnovers. 

Wedemeier led Luther with 24 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. He was 11-of-12 from the field and two-of-two at the line. Matos had 17 points and five rebounds. 

Luther shot 48.1% from the field, including 37.0% (10-of-27) in the second half. Luther shot 25.0% (four-of-16) from three-point range and 40.0% (two-of-five) from the free throw line in the game.

UW-L returns to action Tuesday, November 27 at Bethany Lutheran College (MInn.) at 7 p.m.
