COBLESKILL, NY - The Medaille men's basketball team made their road debut this evening as they headed to SUNY Cobleskill for a non-conference tilt. The Mavs would survive a back and forth affair, escaping with an (83-79) victory to remain unbeaten.
The Mavs came out victorious in a game that saw a combined (39) turnovers, but a strong shooting performance in the second half coupled with solid work on the glass helped lead the Mavs to the win.
The Mavs seized a twelve point lead with (4:42) remaining in the opening half when Josh Laureano knocked down a pair of free throws to grab a (37-25) lead. The Fighting Tigers would chip away at the lead as they drew within five at the half. The Mavs carried a (40-35) lead into the intermission.
The Mavs played more efficient basketball in the second half, despite being outscored (44-43). They connected on (48.0%) of their second half shots, including (5 for 11) from beyond the arc in the final twenty minutes of play.
Four Mavericks notched double digit scoring totals with both Jammal Coleman and Tyler Stevens posting team best (15) point efforts. Coleman was (4 for 8) from the floor and pulled down (7) boards while Stevens connected on (5 of 10) field goal attempts and grabbed six boards.
Senior Anthony Battaglia finished with (14) points on (5 of 8) shooting from floor while knocking down an impressive (3 of 4) long range shots and dishing out four assists. Fellow senior Josh Laureano led the Mavs with a game high five assists and a game best eight rebounds as well.
The Mavs preserved the victory by holding Cobleskill without a field goal over the final (2:28) of play. The win keeps Medaille unbeaten at (2-0) as they prepare to host Cazenovia College for another non-conference game on Saturday (11/24) at 3:00pm in the Sullivan Center.
