Led by Carl Yaffe, who scored his 1,000th career point and earned Tournament MVP honors, the New York University men's basketball team outlasted John Jay College 67-65 to capture the NYU Tip-Off Tournament title. The Violets hosted the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 17-18, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Yaffe totaled 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists to lead NYU (2-0) to its third straight Tip-Off Championship. His jumper 43 seconds into the second half put him over the 1,000-point plateau, making him the 28th player in program history to reach the illustrious mark.

Highlights

- Yaffe was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Kyle Stockmal and Ryan Tana. Stockmal had a game-high 17 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds against the Bloodhounds (1-1). Tana recorded 10 points, four boards and three blocks.

- The Violets led by as much as 14 in the first half, but John Jay fought all the way back and gained a 41-40 lead early in the second period.

- NYU responded with a 21-6 run during which Stockmal hit a pair of threes and Tana added one of his own.

- However, the Bloodhounds again battled back, cutting the deficit to just two with 2:55 left. From there, though, Tana and Stockmal combined to go 5-6 from the line to seal the win for the Violets.

- John Jay's Jamar Harry and Isaiah Holman, as well as SUNY Geneseo's Connor Fedge, rounded out the All-Tournament Team.

"I'm really proud of the guys – that was a hard-fought game and John Jay is a very tough team," said Head Coach Joe Nesci. "We're all very happy for Carl. He's been a tremendous player for us and a great representative of the program."

NYU will play in another tournament next weekend, as it travels to Hamilton College for the Hamilton Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 24-25. The Violets open play against Utica College at 5:00 pm on Saturday.
