OSWEGO, N.Y. – Five players on the Oswego State men's basketball team (1-0) scored in double-digits and each Laker tallied points in a 122-72 rout of D'Youville (0-1) on Friday night in the first round of the Max Ziel Tournament.

With the win, the Lakers advance to the championship game where they will face Morrisville, who ousted Medgar Evars, 87-59. The Lakers crossed the 100-point plateau for the first time since Nov. 22, 2011, when they tallied 107 points against Cobleskill.

The Lakers broke the game open midway through the first half when they went on a 29-5 run to push the lead to 27 points in a 4:29 span. Six different Lakers scored during the stretch, which was highlighted by Rashawn Powell's (So., Johnson City, N.Y.) six points, three rebounds and two steals.

Oswego State expanded its lead to 32 points by halftime, with freshman Elijiah McLaurin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) netting a layup while being followed. A missed free throw by McLaurin kept the Lakers one point shy of tying the school record of points in a half of 70. However, the Lakers still held a cushy 69-37 lead at the break.

D'Youville continued to run a press on defense in the second half, forcing Oswego State into a fast-paced offense. Neither team scored in the second half until D'Youville's Anthony Wiechec scored a bucket with 16:39 left in the game.

Senior captain Hayden Ward (Montauk, N.Y.) countered with five quick points to cap off his 16-point, eight-rebound night before resting for the last 13 minutes of the game. Powell finished with 13 points and also tacked on eight rebounds.

However, freshman Zach D'Alessandro (Sackets Harbor, N.Y.) stole the show in the second half. The freshman hit five of his eight attempts from downtown en route to 18 points in just 13 minutes of play.

Oswego State tallied 30 assists on its 43 made field goals, while shooting 56 percent from the floor. The Lakers fell just six points shy of the single-game record for points scored, which was set in 1971.

Erik Prophet led the Spartans with 15 points.

The Spartans play Medgar Evers in the consolation round at 2 p.m. Saturday, and the Lakers will take the court at 6 p.m. against Morrisville in the championship game.
