For only the third time in the last 12 seasons, the Centre College men's basketball team dropped its season-opener falling 60-50 to Maryville College Thursday, Nov. 15 in Maryville, Tenn.

Sophomore Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) knocked down a three-pointer for the first points of the season to give the Colonels their first lead of the season. 

One minute later Maryville's Joey Bodewig was fouled after a made lay-up. He hit the free throw and the game was tied with 18:41 left in the opening period.

The game then went almost four and a half minutes before the next points were scored. Maryville hit a pair of lay-ups and a three pointer to take a 10-3 lead at the 12:22 mark.

Centre used a 11-2 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Karsner, to take a 14-12 lead with under nine minutes till the half. After a Maryville free throw, another three by Karnser pushed the lead to four points.

Trailing 25-21 with 3:19 on the clock, the Scots (1-0) scored the final five points of the half to take a 26-25 lead into the intermission.

The Colonels regained the lead to start the half when Karsner, like the first half, opened the period with another three-pointer to give Centre a 28-26 edge. That would be the last time the Colonels would have a lead as the Scots scored 15 of the next 21 points to take a 41-34 lead with 12:47 to play.

Karsner's last of six three-pointers on the night at the 3:20 mark cut the lead to four (52-48), but Maryville scored eight of the next 10 points to finish the game with the 10-point victory.

The two teams combined to shoot only 29.3% on the night (Centre - 29.1%, Maryville - 29.5%). Karsner led all scorers with 20 points on 7 of 12 shooting, including 6 of 10 from beyond the three-point arc. He also had five rebounds, a block and a steal in 21 minutes of action. Freshman Tyler Wesley (Crestwood, Ky.) added nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds in his first collegiate game.

Wes Lambert led three Scots in double figures with 18 points. Oscar Butler scored 12 points and Christian Ford added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

Centre (0-1) will return to Danville Monday, Nov. 19 for its home-opener against Franklin College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.
