Inside Game Falters In Loss At Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. (1/16/12)— Dewon McKenzie and Ebo Nana-Kweson accounted for half of Concordia's points as the Cobbers fell 74-58 at Gustavus on Monday. Concordia never led in the game and lost for the fifth time in the last six games.

McKenzie had 16 points and Nana-Kweson added 13 and made 10 of the Cobbers' 20 shots from the floor.  McKenzie was also 7-for-7 from the free throw line. No other Cobber player had more than six points in the game.

The difference in the game came around the basket. Concordia was outrebounded 36-24 and outscored 26-16 in points in the paint. The Cobbers' big men accounted for only seven points and 11 rebounds in the game.

The game turned in the Gusties' favor midway through the first half. After CC junior guard Brady Baildon connected on a 3-point basket to cut the lead to three points, the Gusties made their next three shots and opened up a 10-point margin at 28-18 with 7:34 to play. The Cobbers were able to get the deficit to single digits on a pair of occasions before GAC finished off the period on a 7-2 run to take a 43-27 lead into the break.

Gustavus then scored 11 of the first 14 points in the second half and ran out to a 24-point lead to put the game out of reach.

Concordia (5-10/3-7 MIAC) shot 39.2% (20-for-51) from the floor, 29.4% (5-for-17) from outside the arc and 81.3% (13-for-16) from the foul line. It is the first time all season that the Cobbers have posted back-to-back games with a free throw percentage above 80.0% .

Gustavus (10-4/7-2 MIAC) shot 63.3% (19-for-30) in the first half and finished the game by shooting 52.5% (32-for-61). GAC was also hot from 3-point range, connecting on 66.7% (6-for-9) of their attempts from behind the arc.

The Gusties had three players in double figures and had 10 players score at least two points. Tyler Grey was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and finished with a game-high 17 points. Reed Sallstrom came off the bench to grab a game-high eight rebounds.

Concordia will continue their tiring January pace of play when they host Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:45 p.m.
