RADNOR, Pa.—Fifth-ranked Cabrini College needed a late 3-pointer to force overtime and then scored the game's final four points from the free throw line to outlast upset minded Hobart College 90-88 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship. The Statesmen end their historic season with a 23-6 record, breaking the school marks for wins and winning percentage in a season.
Junior guard Stefan Thompson led Hobart with 22 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Richie Bonney recorded 17 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Joe Gibbons produced 15 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior forward Matt Pebole capped his career with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Cavaliers got a game-high 25 points, seven rebounds, and four assists from Cory Lemons while Aaron Walton-Moss contributed 23 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Cabrini (28-1) scored the first basket of the game, but Hobart netted the next four, including three from sophomore guard Joe Gibbons, to build an 8-2 lead. A 12-2 run midway through the first half ballooned the Statesmen lead to its peak 24-11 with 10:33 to go.
Hobart carried a 45-37 lead into halftime. The Statesmen shot 58.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while limiting Cabrini to 37.2 percent shooting. Hobart was 20-0 this season when leading at halftime.
After the break, the Cavaliers chipped away at the Statesmen lead until finally tying the game 57-all on a 3-pointer by AJ Williams with 13:03 left in regulation. From there, neither team led by more than five points. Bonney's layup at the 1:58 mark put Hobart ahead 84-79.
Lemons drained a jumper 22 seconds later to make it a one-possession game. Hobart turned the ball over on its ensuing possession and Jeremy Knowles buried a 3-pointer to tie the game with 54 seconds left in regulation. The Statesmen committed another turnover and Cabrini missed its chance to win in regulation with 1 second to go.
Hobart entered the final minute of OT trailing 87-86, but Thompson hit a jumper with 28 seconds left to complete his scoring night and give the Statesmen their final lead. He fouled out with 13 seconds to go and Walton-Moss made both free throws to put the Cavaliers in front for good. Hobart lost the ball with two seconds remaining and Cabrini made another throw to close out its victory.
