LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Cal Lutheran ended the regular season on a high note with a 65-54 victory over Occidental on the road. Aaron Van Klaveren, Xavier Walton and John Wilson each made his final collegiate appearance tonight.

Box Score: CLU 65, OXY 54 - F

CLU stormed out with 11 unanswered points and although Occidental pulled within a pair, 14-12 with 10:59 in the opening half, the Kingsmen held a comfortable 37-25 lead at the intermission.

Cal Lutheran never trailed throughout the course of the night and cruised their way to the 11 point victory. The Kingsmen shot at a 44 percent clip and had three players in double figures.

When asked about the evening, Walton talked about how it was a well played game.

"We took control early and it was a good way to go out."

Jayvaughn Nettles led the offensive attack for the Kingsmen with a 16 point night, also coming away with a game high four steals. He was responsible for three of the seven CLU three-pointers.

In his final game, Van Klaveren was unfortunately limited to 23 minutes due to early foul trouble, but managed to post one final double-double. In the first half alone he pulled down eight rebounds en route to 12, netting 10 total points.

Being on the bench for nearly half of a game he typically would have played practically every minute of may not have been the way Van Klaveren envisioned his final game, but he made the most of it.

"It was frustrating being in early foul trouble, but it gave me a good opportunity to sit back and watch our younger guys step up and play and contribute," he shared after the game. "It was pretty nostalgic; It gave me a chance to think back about my career, while watching what the future holds for CLU basketball."

One of those freshmen who stepped up was Mike Harris, who chipped in with 15 points. He also handed out four assists, as did Walton. Walton, the CLU point guard added seven points, three rebounds and a steal to his final line of the season.

Steven Davis was perfect from the floor in the first half, shooting 4-for-4 for nine points, equaling the total that Jayvaughn Nettles contributed. All three of Nettles points came via the three-point shot.

Just as Van Klaveren looked to the future, so did Walton who commended the first and second year players on their efforts.

"It was great to see our younger guys step up and play well," he went on, "seeing Davis and Harris and all those guys improve over the course of the season was fun to watch, especially tonight."

CLU played solid on both ends of the court. They grabbed 10 more rebounds than Oxy with 36.

In the first half, Deshun McCoy paced the Tigers with 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the floor, but was limited to just four points in the final 20 minutes to finish with a game high 17 in the loss. Conrad Liebowitz had a 15 point night, adding a team high seven rebounds for Occidental.

In a total team effort, the seniors were proud of the way they finished. Wilson said following the game that it was a 'great way to end a season of highs and lows on,' noting the two big wins - against solid Redlands and Occidental teams - to round out their 2011-12 campaign.

"Tonight was probably the best complete game we played all year," Wilson added, "I could not be any prouder of the way we played tonight and how we hung in there all season as a team."

Cal Lutheran concludes the season with an 11-13 overall record, 7-7 in SCIAC play for a fifth place finish.
